Typical Polish dishes

Polish cuisine has its roots in multiculturalism that has also characterized its history, for this reason you can find so many influences from Russian, Belarusian, Ukrainian, Lithuanian, German, Czech, Jewish and Austrian dishes.

Poles like meat, smoked fish, and soups. Below you will find a guide to the dishes (starters, soups, main dishes and desserts, among others) that you cannot miss during your stay in Poland.

Śledź
One of the most popular starter is herring with cream, onion and apple. Recommended to pass vodka shots.

Pierogi
They are a kind of ravioli or dumplings of various types, they can be filled with meat, sauerkraut and mushrooms, potatoes and cottage cheese (also called Russian), lentils or fruits of the region.

Barszcz czerwony
This is a well-known red soup made from beets, which is usually eaten during Christmas Eve dinner.

Żurek
It is a soup made from the rye flour, with mushrooms, pieces of Polish sausage (kielbasa) and boiled eggs.

Grzybowa
It is a very traditional soup made from wild mushrooms and pasta.

Pyzy
Cooked potato dumplings, served with meat or cottage cheese.

Kasza gryczana
Cooked buckwheat grains.

Gołąbki
Cabbage leaves stuffed with meat and rice, with an exquisite tomato sauce.

Bigos
It is a delicious traditional Polish dish that consists of sauerkraut, mushrooms and different types of meat. Although it seems very simple, it requires a lot of work.

Kotlet Schabowy
Breaded pork chops. You can’t stop tasting  them! Usually served with potatoes and cabbage salad with carrots.

Kaczka z jabłkami
Roast wild duck with apples.

Golonka
Roasted or cooked pork knuckle.

Surówki
Servings of salad that accompany the main course.

Pączek
Polish donuts filled with jam.

Sernik
Cheesecake with raisins.

Szarlotka
Shortcrust pastry with apples and cinnamon.

Makowiec
Polish poppy seed roll made from yeast cake with poppy seed filling, with icing on the top of the cake.

Potato pancakes.

Naleśniki
Pancake stuffed with cottage cheese or fruit and cream.
